Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore

AFEPA Double Degree Programme

Faculty of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Sciences at Cattolica's SMEA (Alta Scuola in Economia Agro-alimentare) - Cremona

The AFEPA Programme is offered by a consortium of 4 European partner universities (the University of Bonn, Germany, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala, Sweden, the Université Catholique de Louvain, Louvain-la-neuve, Belgium, and the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Cremona, Italy). Participating students spend one year each at two of the European partner universities, obtaining a double degree by the two Universities the students attend.

Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Faculty of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Sciences at SMEA (Alta Scuola in Economia Agro-alimentare) gives participants of the Master of Science in Agricultural and Food Economics the opportunity to undertake the second year of their course at one of the host universities of the AFEPA Consortium. Students will receive Laurea Magistrale from Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore and one of the following degrees at the end of the Programme:

Programme structure

The Master’s programme in Agricultural, Food and Environmental Policy Analysis (AFEPA) is a two-year programme of 120 ECTS credits.

The academic programme consists of:

  • a number of compulsory courses for 30 ECTS credits
  • a number of optional courses for 54 or 55 ECTS credits that can form a major area for a minimum of 30 ECTS and a minor area for a minimum of 15 ECTS
  • two short summer schools for 5 or 6 ECTS credits in total
  • a thesis for 30 ECTS credits.

Students are associated with at least two of the four Partners participating in the AFEPA Consortium.

In general, students spend

  • their first academic year in one of the four Partner institutions (SLU, UBonn, UCL, or Università Cattolica) which offer the core courses in microeconomics and quantitative methods;
  • their second academic year in one of the three other Partner institutions (SLU, UBonn, UCL, or Università Cattolica).

The language of instruction and examination is English for all the courses at SLU, UBonn and Università Cattolica, and most of the courses at UCL.

Final Thesis

AFEPA Master’s students prepare their Master’s thesis under the joint supervision of two faculty members, one from each of the Partner institutions awarding the Double Degree.

The final thesis is preferably defended at the end of the second academic year of the AFEPA programme in conjunction with the AFEPA summer school. If, for any reason, the student cannot defend the thesis in conjunction with the summer school, the defence takes place in the Partner institution where the student attends the second academic year.

After the defence, the examiners send an evaluation report to each Partner institution awarding the Master’s degree. This evaluation is used for calculating the final graduation mark, if any, following the internal rules of each Partner institution.
